Both are Mac apps that turn a long video into short captioned clips without uploading it. That makes this a closer comparison than tondi against a cloud service: the differences are in price structure, what each app needs the internet for, which Macs they run on, and how they frame a vertical clip.

Where Reelify is better

• Pay once. $59 for Creator, for good — currently an introductory price against a regular $118. tondi is $100 a year and has no lifetime plan, so Reelify is cheaper from the first year and free after it.
• The crop follows the speaker. Reelify detects who is talking and frames them, with dual-crop layouts for two-person interviews. tondi keeps the whole widescreen frame over a blurred background — fine for a single presenter, less good for a wide two-shot.
• Phone apps. There is a Reelify app for iPhone and Android. tondi is Mac only.
• A number per clip. If a virality score helps you decide what to post, Reelify shows one on its top tier. tondi ranks clips internally and doesn't.

Where tondi is better

• Runs on macOS 13 and 14. Reelify needs macOS 15. If your Mac is a couple of years behind, that decides it.
• Nothing leaves your Mac — including the transcript. Reelify says video and audio never leave the Mac, and that AI analysis needs a brief internet connection; it doesn't say what goes over it. tondi's clipping never opens a connection. Transcription, scoring and rendering are all local, so there is nothing to send.
• 111 MB, not 2 GB. Plus a one-time 484 MB model. The whole thing is smaller than Reelify's download.
• Every shape, every plan. Square and 4:5 for feeds, 16:9 for the original cut, 9:16 for Shorts — from one run, on Free.
• A free plan without a video limit, on the Mac. Reelify's free Mac tier stops after two videos — though their free iPhone and iPad app has no video limit at all, so if a phone workflow suits you that route stays open. tondi Free clips as many as you like, three clips each, with a small watermark, for as long as you like.

Why an editor would still be on macOS 13 or 14

Reelify needs macOS 15. Every Apple Silicon Mac can run macOS 15, so this is not about old hardware — it is about machines that have deliberately not been upgraded, and there are more of those in editing than in most work.

Audio and video people pin their operating system on purpose. A plugin vendor has not certified the new release; a studio machine is mid-project and nobody is touching it until delivery; an NLE or a control surface broke the last time and the shop has a rule about it now. "Upgrade the OS to use a clipping tool" is a bigger ask in that setting than it sounds, because the OS is the one thing the whole room depends on.

If your Mac is already on macOS 15 or later this section does not apply to you, and the decision comes down to the rest of the page. tondi runs on macOS 13 and later, which shipped in late 2022.

Paying once versus paying monthly, honestly

Reelify's $59 Creator plan is cheaper than tondi from the first year and free after it. That is simply true, and no amount of framing changes it.

Two things are worth knowing before treating it as settled. The first is that $59 is currently an introductory price — their pricing page gives the regular figure as $118, so the deal you are comparing today may not be the one on offer later. The second is what each kind of price buys. Paying once buys the app as it stands, plus whatever the developer chooses to ship afterwards; their site does not say how long updates are included, which is a fair question to put to them before paying. A subscription buys continued work, and stops when you stop paying.

Neither is the honest answer for everyone. If you clip occasionally and want it off your books, pay once. If you would rather the thing kept being maintained and can drop it the month you stop needing it, pay monthly. The one case where tondi plainly wins on price is month to month: $10 against $15.

Both are local. The difference is what "local" covers

This is the closest comparison on the site, because the argument that settles the cloud comparison does not apply here. Neither app uploads your video. So the question gets narrower: which parts run with no network at all?

Reelify's site says video and audio never leave the Mac, and that AI analysis needs a brief internet connection. It does not say what travels over that connection. It may well be a licence check; it may be something about the transcript. We are not going to guess on their behalf.

tondi's position is easier to state because there is nothing to qualify: after the one-time model download, clipping opens no connection at all. Transcription, scoring and rendering are local, so there is nothing available to send.

You can test either claim yourself in a minute, and for footage under an NDA it is worth doing rather than taking anyone's word for it: turn the Wi-Fi off and clip a video. Whatever still works was never using the network.

Accuracy, and whether you get to choose it

tondi exposes transcription quality as a setting — three tiers, each a different model that downloads once and is then kept:

Reelify's site does not mention a model or accuracy choice, which may mean it picks one for you — a reasonable design, and one fewer decision to make. If you mostly clip clean studio audio you will probably never touch tondi's setting either.

Which one is more private?

Both keep your video on your Mac. The difference is the transcript: tondi never sends it anywhere, because the highlight scoring runs locally too. Reelify's site says AI analysis needs a brief internet connection and doesn't say what is transmitted — for most people that is fine; for footage under an NDA, ask them before relying on it.

Does tondi track the speaker like Reelify?

No. tondi renders the full frame over a blurred background, so nobody is ever cropped out, but nobody is followed either. If your source is a single person facing the camera, the result is the same; if it is a wide two-shot, Reelify's crop will look tighter.

Is there a lifetime licence for tondi?

No. tondi is $10 a month, or a yearly plan, and the free plan has no end date. If paying once matters most, Reelify's $59 Creator plan is the better buy.

Can I run both?

Yes. Neither needs an account to try, and both work from a file on your Mac. Drop the same video into each and compare the clips they pick — that is the only comparison that settles it for your footage.

Does the $59 cover future versions?

Their site does not say how long updates are included, so ask them before paying if that matters to you. It is the one question a one-time price always raises and the one most pages about lifetime deals skip.

Is the free iPhone app a reason to pick Reelify?

If you want to clip on a phone, yes — straightforwardly. tondi is a Mac app and there is no iOS version, so for a phone-first workflow this comparison is already decided.

How do I check what either app sends?
