tondi vs Opus Clip

tondi is an Opus Clip alternative for Mac: both take a long video and hand you short, captioned, vertical clips. The difference is where the work happens. Opus Clip is a website: you upload, it processes on their servers, you download. tondi is a Mac app: the video never leaves your machine. Almost everything else — price, speed, privacy, limits — follows from that one fact.

Pick Opus Clip if you're on Windows, you want a browser-based team workflow, or you want features beyond clipping — scheduling, brand kits, AI B-roll, virality scores.

The upload nobody counts
Comparisons of cloud clippers quote processing time and leave out the upload. It is usually the longest part of the job, and all of it happens before Opus Clip starts work.
The arithmetic is just division. A one-hour 1080p recording is commonly around 2 GB. Measured against your connection's upload speed — not the download figure providers advertise — that is:

Those are best cases. They assume the whole line, nothing else using it and no protocol overhead, which in practice costs another 10–15%. Most home and small-office connections are also asymmetric: a 500 Mbps download often comes with 20–50 Mbps up, and older DSL or rural lines sit well under 10.
tondi's figure for the same file is zero, because there is no transfer step — it reads the file off your disk and starts. That is the honest shape of the speed difference. Local transcription is not inherently faster at the transcribing; it just skips a stage the cloud cannot skip.
Accuracy, and what you trade for it
Opus Clip makes this choice for you. tondi puts it in front of you: three transcription tiers, each one a different model that downloads once and is then kept.

Each model is fetched once and never again, which is what lets tondi work with the network off afterwards. Nothing about your video travels the other way; the privacy policy lists every connection the app makes.
Where Opus Clip is better
- It runs anywhere. tondi is Apple Silicon only. If you're on Windows or an Intel Mac, this comparison is moot.
- It does more than clip. Posting schedules, brand kits, B-roll, team accounts. tondi deliberately does one thing.
- Nothing to install. A browser tab is all it needs.
- The crop follows the subject. Opus Clip's reframe tracks whoever is on screen. tondi keeps the whole widescreen frame over a blurred background — fine for one presenter, less good for a wide two-shot.
Where tondi is better
- No upload to anyone's servers. A 2 GB recording doesn't have to go anywhere. Unreleased footage, client work, anything you'd rather not hand to a server — it stays put.
- No meter. Clip ten hours of podcast a month for $10. On Opus Clip that's roughly two Pro plans' worth of minutes.
- No waiting. Processing starts the moment you drop the file, on your own chip.
- Every shape, every plan. Square and 4:5 aren't upsells.
- Clips don't expire. They're files in a folder on your Mac.

Three ordinary cases
A weekly 90-minute podcast. That is 390 minutes of source a month. Opus Clip Pro covers 300, so in most months the fourth episode has no minutes left and the next tier up is Business, quoted per customer rather than listed. On tondi the fourth episode costs what the first did.
A daily 20-minute show, five days a week. About 400 minutes a month, and the same wall. On tondi it is one flat charge and a batch queue you can leave running.
One 3-hour conference recording. 180 minutes eats most of a Starter month in a single file, before you have touched anything else you shot that week. On tondi the length of the file changes how long it takes and nothing else.
The pattern is worth naming: per-minute pricing charges most to the people with the most material, and long recordings are exactly where short clips come from. If you only clip occasionally, Opus Clip's free tier may genuinely be enough, and this page is not trying to talk you out of it.
What "word-timed captions" actually means
Both apps burn captions into the finished clip. The difference is what those captions are timed against.
tondi transcribes with a timestamp on every individual word, so a caption can change at the moment the word is said. Opus Clip's captions are animated templates, which look more designed straight out of the box and which carry a watermark on the Free plan.
Which one you want depends on the work. A template gets you to a polished look faster. Word timing is what keeps a caption readable at speed on a muted phone, and it is what lets you set your own font and colours without re-timing anything by hand. tondi gives you the font, the colours and the position. It does not give you animated presets, and it is not going to pretend that is a feature.
How to settle it in an afternoon
Neither app needs a card to try, so this does not have to stay theoretical.
- Take one recording you have already published, so you know which moments actually landed with an audience.
- Ask both for the same number of clips at the same length.
- Compare what each one chose, not how the captions look. The choice is the part you cannot fix afterwards.
- Time the whole round trip, upload included.

Common questions
Can tondi import from a YouTube link like Opus Clip?
No. tondi works from a file on your Mac. If the video is on YouTube, download it first with a tool of your choice, then drop the file in.
Does tondi have virality scores?
It scores every candidate clip internally and keeps the best ones, but it doesn't show you a number. The scoring is a set of rules — hook words, emphasis, speech rate, audio energy — not a language model, so it has no opinion about what will "go viral". Nobody does.
Can I try tondi without an account?
Yes. The Free plan needs no account and no card. An account only comes into it if you go Pro.
What happens to my Opus Clip workflow?
Nothing carries over — there's nothing to import. Drop the same source video into tondi and compare the clips it picks.
Does tondi run on an Intel Mac?
No — Apple Silicon (M1 or later) and macOS 13 or later, with no Intel and no Windows build. If that rules you out, Opus Clip runs in any browser. The full list is on requirements.
How long does a three-hour recording take?
Longer than a short one, roughly in proportion, and it runs on your own chip instead of waiting in a queue. There is no length limit and no extra charge for a long file.
Can I use the clips commercially?
Yes. They are ordinary mp4 files cut from your own footage. On Free they carry a small tondi watermark; on Pro they carry nothing.
What happens if I cancel Pro?
You keep every clip you have already exported — they are files on your disk, not rows in someone's library. The app returns to Free limits at the end of the period you have paid for.
Does Opus Clip train on my video?

Is there a team plan?
No. There is one Pro price, and it follows the person rather than the machine — sign in on your laptop and your studio Mac. Each editor needs their own. If a shared cloud workspace with seats is the thing you actually need, Opus Clip sells that and tondi does not.
